onion isnt creepy or malicious, he genuinely likes hanging out with steven, genuinely wants to show him the things that mean a lot to him, genuinely thinks of him as a friend. and guess what!!! he’s autistic!!!

he’s already been coded very much as a non verbal autistic child, and this episode absolutely confirmed things for me. he only feels comfortable sharing his voice with family, he doesnt like food but likes playing with it (sensory issues anyone? i know i’m there), his interests are different from steven but we see things that he really enjoys or cares about! jumping on his bed (could be stimming, also just fun!), an animal friend, a video undoubtedly given to him by his mother in what was either trying to be educational or a strange gift, but obviously meant a lot to him and i mean think about it, it’s very heartfelt. for lots of people birth is a magical moment. and then he showed steven a small special room- a safe space! filled with his cool things. he even chose to share one.

i see nothing creepy about onion tbh i just see an autistic kid and its obvious his mother is supportive of all his “quirks” and likes to let him be his own self. no aba for this family! i kinda wish i could see more of his interactions w sour cream too.

also, sidenote- i’ve seen ppl mentioning how onion showing steven his birth is another step in a buildup this season leading steven to question his humanity and i definitely see that and im excited to see where it leads.

I feel like I should mention that Onion’s communication-related behavior (whispering to his mother what he wants to communicate, etc) is very similar to that of a child with selective mutism! which is often comorbid with autism and other developmental disorders.
